Health Sciences is a one-year course designed for high school students wishing to enter the medical field. Students will acquire valuable knowledge and training that will prepare them for a variety of healthcare professions. They will gain experience in basic health care, CPR, anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, and common disorders while in a lab, clinical, or classroom setting. Clinical and classroom experiences prepare students to take the state's Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam.

Mrs. Bledsoe, MS-CTE, BSN, RN, joined the NCC staff in August 2016 to pursue her passion of teaching. She graduated with honors in 1990 from Missouri Western State College now Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo., with a bachelor's degree in Nursing. Prior to NCC, Bledsoe worked 26 years as an RN in multiple areas including at hospital diabetic and medical surgical units, home health and long-term care. She also worked as Parent Educator and substitute nurse for the North Platte R-1 Parents As Teachers program, and Charge nurse and MDS Coordinator for a long-term care and skilled nursing rehabilitation facility.

brown

Mr. Brown, MS-CTE, BSN, RN, became the Health Sciences instructor after teaching the Practical Nursing program at NCC from 2013-2017. He has more than 30 years of nursing experience. Before working at NCC he worked as a CNA instructor and spent many years before that in acute care. He began his career in healthcare as a CNA in February of 1983 at a nursing home in his hometown. David continued his education, obtaining his LPN in 1989 from Kansas City Mo. Board of Education Program of Practical Nursing. From there, he obtained his ADN in 1995 from Sanford-Brown College, David completed his BSN in July of 2013 at MidAmerica Nazarene University. Since then, David has completed the required course of study to obtain his Educator's certification through DESE.

INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CREDENTIALS/OTHER CERTIFICATIONS

Students meeting the qualifications are eligible for the Missouri Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA). They also can earn CPR, First Aid, Stop the Bleed and OSHA for Healthcare.

COLLEGE CREDIT

Program completers may earn up to 6 hours college credits from Metropolitan Community College.
