The MCC-Maple Woods Early College Program, open to juniors and seniors, prepares students for agricultural careers in a variety of areas through coursework, labs, project based learning, and greenhouse studies. Agricultural Sciences introduces students to the cultivation, processing, marketing and distribution of food, forestry and horticulture that occur in built-up “intra-urban” areas. Career and degree pathways are created through the teaching of fundamental core areas: Agribusiness (production, processing and distribution, economics, marketing, farm management, logistics), Animal Science (livestock production, aquaculture, animal nutrition, meat science, veterinary science), Plant Science (horticulture, agronomy, hydroponics, aquaponics, aeroponics, landscaping, turf Management, greenhouse management, urban agriculture). Agriculture has been identified as a growing career field with many job opportunities and a shortage of qualified workers. The USDA reports that approximately 10.3% of all US jobs relate to Agriculture and 1.4% of those jobs are in farming.
This program takes place at MCC-Maple Woods with support from NCC. Students will earn the same high school credits as other NC programs, in addition to the college credit hours. English and Math credits will also be part of the course, similar to all NCC programs. NKC School District will provide transportation for their students. All other students will have to provide their own transportation. This class is only available in the AM. Students in this program will not come to NCC.
